I would think this could be his wife, she is showing off a wedding ring and the pose with her touching his leg  is usually a sign of a married couple.

Thanks for the restore and observations Pat. Will have to do a bit of digging now as my first thought was that it was his sister mainly as she is wearing what appears to be a 'sweetheart brooch' which looks to be unlike the RWR Badge more like 'Sherwood Foresters' or maybe I'm just clutching at straws. Again many thanks. Ashjo.

Hi Ashjo, are you certain you have the right relatives in this photo?

My concern would be that the man in the photo wears a leather ammunition bandoleer. These were only worn by men in mounted units and not by Infantrymen.

The other concern is the lanyard. A white lanyard was worn by members of the Royal Artillery.

So I think you will find the chap in the photo is a Gunner with the Royal Artillery.

I hope this helps?

Cheers, Ade.

Hi Ade, and many thanks for your observation.

The photograph was among several WW1 family related ones I was recently able to scan.           My mistaken assumption was that it was (Harry Smith b.1881). However all is not lost - he did have a nephew (Oscar Smith 1888-1917) my g/uncle who I know for a fact was in the Royal Artillery so will have to do a bit more digging. There's a moral there some-where about not assuming things !!

Regards, Ashjo.

Thanks to Ade all now sorted.

The lady in the photograph identified as one Ellen Reynolds. She and my G/Uncle Oscar Smith (who was in the Royal Artillery) were married Dec 25th 1913. Oscar was kia 1917.

Ashjo.

Presumably 24224 Gnr Smith of 5 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery died 8 Sep 1917 in 46 Casualty Clearing Station.  Interred Mendinghem Military Cemetery Belgium.  Ellen remarried to a Spencer before 1920.

Her brooch is a Royal Artillery badge (all branches of the RA had the same cap badge)

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.
