John T Bell, Lead Mining Agent
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 12:02 GMT (UK) »
John was born, according to 1851 & 1861 census returns, in Stepney, Midlesex.

In 1861 he was described as a lead mining agent and in 1851 as a lead miner.
In 1851, in Wolsingham, his relationship to the head of the house was "son in law" which at that time probably equated to stepson. The wife of the head is Elizabeth Coulthard from which I have concluded that Thomas was the son of a previous marriage to Mr Bell or he was illegitimate and Bell was his mothers maiden surname.

I am stuck finding further info. Does anybody know anything about the Coulthards and/or Bells?

Nicely spotted! I hadn't looked at 1841.

Why would they be listed as a separate household? Looks like John and William are twins but can't find any birth record in Stepney.

They aren't necessarily twins. Ages of people over 15 in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest five years. So someone entered as 15 could in fact be aged between 15 and 19.

Not sure why they are marked as a separate household - they are living in the same house.

Interestingly, though the marriage allegation for the Coulthard/Bell marriage gives her as being a spinster

allegation by William Couldhard, of Stanhope, County Durham, bachelor
for marriage to Elizabeth Bell, of Hunstanworth, County Durham, spinster
at Hunstanworth, County Durham
sworn before Philip Brownrigg (surrogate)
