Boar War Medal Clasps information required
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 14:15 GMT (UK) »
My Great Uncles Richard Ernest Witherington (service number 29763) and (still to be confirmed) Thomas M Thompson (service number 4717) served as Privates during the Boar War. Information from 'Find My Past' states under 'notes' that they both had The Queens South Africa (QSA) Medal Clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. Can anyone please explain exactly what these were.
RE Witherington's regiment was the 100 (Northumberland) Company 5 Battalion Imperial Yeomanry (quite a mouthful) which makes sense as he was from Newcastle, however TM Thompson, who was from Gateshead, was with the 1st (King's) Dragon Guards. As mentioned I can't confirm, as yet, if this is my Thomas M (Murray) Thompson, are there record anywhere of addresses or just towns that people came from? Any information I would be grateful for.
RE Witherington was born in 1878 and TM Thompson in 1875.
Many thanks, Paul Thompson

Mr Wiki has the full list of clasps awarded for battles and campaigns, together with dates and the order in which they should be worn.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I thought it was easier to point you in that direction, than my trying to explain!  :-[

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

There is a record for a Gateshead Thomas Thompson, father Thomas 116 Walker Street although the given age is a bit out.

A number of other T Thompsons have medals from the Boer War but those records have no identifying
information.

Thanks to all for your assistance.
MaxD yes the Richard E Witherington is the correct one, his father was William and at the 1901 census was living at Hardwick Terrace, Gateshead.
Wrong TM Thompson unfortunately, just needed it confirmed. Trouble with common surnames and also common Christian names is that there are so many of them, that's why it's nice when they have a middle name it helps (sometimes).
Again many thanks, appreciated.
