No, I can't see a birth.   Have you sighted the death notice (for Jennie or Violet) or death printout?  Might glean something :D

There is a Jeanie Smith cremation at Karori in 1958. Does that record have any further info.

It is possible that Charles Joseph SMITH was also born at Petone.

I haven't found a likely birth of a James SMITH to Jennie or Jeannie Smith, so I wonder if perhaps 'James' might have been 'Joseph'?

1911 - Charles Joseph SMITH - birth registered at Wellington (1909 - Violet Mildred SMITH reg. Petone, Wellington )

The 1958 death certificate for Jeanie SMITH is attached to one of the online trees - it records "2 x Males (ages unknown) issue of 1st marriage"  ... and "1 x Male = 47 yrs (b. 1911) and 1 x Female = 49 yrs (b. 1909) as issue of union No. 2.
Charles SMITH is recorded as husband No. 2 but where provision is made on cert. for "at what age married" - this has been left blank."

Hi Beg,

Slip of the pen, sorry. His wife's name was Maureen, no name known for the daughter. I can't find a marriage of a James or a Charles Joseph SMITH to 1956.

Have just reviewed my notes and found a comment stating that they married in Auckland.

Hi Lucy2,

Thanks for that. Think I'm barking up the wrong tree and I should change the topic title to 'James SMITH'.

Was Jennie (Jeanie) SMITH the "widow" of John SMITH ... or Charles SMITH  ??

Local electoral rolls show, that for the years 1911 - 1914 and 1919  - Wellington Central roll,  a Jennie SMITH - residing at 11 Leeds Street (Te Aro) - was recorded as a "spinster".  ("Spinster" ... an error or deliberate ? )  [Was that same Jennie SMITH - widow - at 77 Fitzherbert Street, Petone - also in 1911 ??   And 1905-06 -Wellington East roll - married ?? ]

[The Jennie SMITH residing at 11 Leeds Street was the mother and nominated N-o-K of Leonard Andrew SMITH (s/o Jeanie and John) as per his WW1 file.   Attestation form at Image 7 doesn't mention father (John SMITH) is deceased. ]

Spades

... not necessarily barking up wrong tree.  ;D

Did he simply change his name from "Charles Joseph" to "James" ??

Lu,

The school record mentioned in Spade's first post, the address was 11 Leeds Street.  I am thinking they put the child's initials as the Parent/Guardian. The one for Violet Mildred Smith, admission date of 15 March 1915 for Te Aro Infants, address 11 Leeds Street, the Parent was put down as Mrs Smith.

Cheers

The only other piece of information I have found is a school record for a Charles Joseph SMITH who started at Te Aro Infants (School) on 5 July 1917, and his birthday given as 4 July 1911 (sic). His guardian was a C.J. SMITH.

NOTE: Edited to reflect new information.

So who was this child "Charles Joseph SMITH" ... in 1917 at Te Aro School ???

Can't account for his guardian being named as "C.J. SMITH".

*  But was there an address given for the Guardian ?

A Jennie SMITH (mother of Leonard Andrew SMITH) is living at Leeds Street ...  Te Aro - in 1917.     ???
