Hi
I am on ancestry and have saved my tree as a gedcom file numerous times as I update it and have sent it and downloaded it to other programmes successfully. It does not record stories or images though just the text.
I also use Find my past which is much better with parish records and other collections, then once I have found what I want look again on ancestry, or save it then upload the saved file to the gallery on ancestry so I have the info at my finger tips when I need it.
Free reg is also invaluable as a resource for parish records  and has recently been updated so have often found missing records on there when going backwards.
the local family history societies have lots of records on cd's and will also look up things for you but you may have to buy a subscription.
and when all else fails all the wonderful people on here have also sent me in the right direction with info or clues.
hope this helps
