Watchams, Costessey, 1841 census
« on: Wednesday 08 February 17 15:57 GMT (UK) »
I have found Robert Watcham and family on the 1841 census in Cossey, however the only address appears to be on the previous page as Black Swan with an illegible word underneath.

Does anyone know if there was a Black Swan Lane or similar on the 1841 census? I've looked at both FindMyPast and Ancestry but cannot make it out on either.

It could just be Black Swan Inn of course, but the occupation of the man against that is miller.

Not much help in this case but if you look at the first page of the census it gives the area covered.

In this case it says Part of the village of Cossey? lying North of the town house Lane.
As I say not much help  :-\

Is he in the same area in 1851?  Addresses might be clearer there.

1841 starts with Cossey Lane then the mystery Black Swan moving onto Cossey Bank or Bush Inn which is an Inn with an Innkeeper then Town House Lane.

Maybe Cossey Lane still exists and a map would give more detail (clutching at straws!)

Yes the Watchams are still in Cossey on the 1851. This time Black Swan stands alone so I think it was the name of the pub, especially as Millipede says the occupier is an innkeeper and labourer.

Perhaps in those times Cossey was so small and everyone knew each other, so there was no need for formal addresses.

Will have to leave their address as Cossey.

Many thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Many thanks for that amondg. I got all excited thinking the register of electors might throw up my Howards who, although they baptised a child in 1840 and 1841 in Eaton, don't appear to exist on the 1841 census.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Thanks also to The Yokel. Robert had a son Charles but as far as I know he in turn only had two daughters. Will look into that.

The 1841 census on ancestry for Eaton begins at the letter K so all surnames from A-Ke are missing.
Ask the Norfolk Record Office if they have the complete census.
