Military discharge paper
« on: Saturday 11 February 17 21:35 GMT (UK) »
H again
On the lower left of this page is "Intended place of Residence" then "Whitegate, __? Midleton, County Corll ? ( could be Cork, but Ireland doesn't seem like a natural choice with his family in England, although they were mostly grown up
I looked it up and there's a Whitegate, Midleton ( single d ) County Cork, Ireland but I also see a Whitegate, Middleton, ( double d) near Manchester.
I can't tell what the small word is between Whitegate and Middleton? Maybe someone knows?
Thanks again with all the previous help on my many questions.
Brian

Could it be "near"? I think it is County Cork too.

Hello -

Midleton is in County Cork - a superlative whiskey is distilled there.

Ahhh....whiskey, you say? :)
It does look like the Ireland choice might be the correct one, by the description and the answers. I know his son was also in the Royal Engineers and was based and married at Woolwich, in 1880. On the marriage certificate the father is listed as " Sergeant Hants Engineer Militia" I wonder if Hants is a place?

"Hants" is a place, it's the abbreviation often used for Hampshire.

What about on the left side of the discharge paper where it says what looks like "Shille Island, Cull Harbour" as his final discharge place? I thought maybe Scilly Islands but nothing looks like Cull Harbour there and it doesn't look like a place where one might be discharged.
This guy is a mystery!

Could be way off but looking at the way the k of Cork is written it looks more like two Ls, take that thought to the Island, could it be Spike Island Cork Harbour.
Which had a British Army Star Fort on it.
