William Pennington 1751 Lancaster, elusive burial/death record
« on: Tuesday 14 February 17 12:28 GMT (UK) »
I have a baptism for William at St Mary, Lancaster 23/6/1751, father Matthew
William married Margaret Eccles by licence 2/12/1778, also at St Mary. The marriage bond states he is 26 years old so I am fairly confident this is my man.
William and Margaret have ten children Thomas 1779, William 1780, John 1782, Miles 1786 died 1788, Miles 1789 (my 4xG grandfather), Catherine 1791, Sarah 1793, Edmund 1795, David 1797 and Margaret 1799, all born Slyne, Overton, Skerton and Scotforth. Margaret was buried at Holy Trinity, Bolton-le-Sands 17/12/1834

I can find no record of William's death or burial, no evidence of him still living by 1841 census.
I would appreciate any help to locate a death or burial.
I am also trying (and miserably failing) to find a connection between William and a Miles Pennington, upholsterer of Lancaster who acted as bondsman for William's marriage licence. I have Miles's marriage, several children and a potential birth in 1740
All input greatly appreciated

Have you got any occupation for William?

If there is a headstone for Margaret that might give some information.  Even "widow of" would tell us he died before her.

William was a husbandman on his marriage, no mention of occupation on any baptism records. The burial for Margaret doesn't state whether she is a widow. If I was local I would have tramped round the grave yard at Holy Trinity, unfortunately I am on the opposite coast :)

The memorial inscription booklet for Holy Trinity is reproduced here on their own website
http://bolton-le-sands.org.uk/monumental-inscriptions-holy-trinity-bls/

Unfortunately there is no surname index and it doesn't seem to be a searchable pdf, , so you will have to skim through it.

Good luck!

Even better news, I have found William and Margaret's headstone in that PDF plus some relatives!
Now to find the link between William and Miles the upholsterer :)

And as an added bonus the headstone of my 3xG grandfather and his family on my dad's line! What I find interesting is that Wiiliam was the first death listed on the headstone yet there is no record of it in the original parish register (Bolton-le-Sands is on Ancestry for that period) Presumably that is why there is no transcription on Lancs OPC or Family Search

Excellent news  :)

So when did William die?  Could it be he died somewhere else and that's why there is no record of it.

The whole inscription reads
In memory of William Pennington who died 23rd May 1820 aged 69 years. Also Margaret Pennington, his wife, who died Dec 14th 1834 aged 78 years. Also Sarah Henderson, their daughter, who died Nov 16th 1844 aged 51 years. Also Jane Henderson, her daughter, who died July 22nd 1854 aged 34 years. Also Robert Hodgson who died Dec 24th 1851 aged 61 years.

Looking at the parish register where he should be listed there are several alterations and omissions from March to June of that year. But maybe he was buried elsewhere and they couldn't afford a headstone so commemorated him when Margaret died years later.

ETA I haven't tracked all of William's children but Sarah was baptised in 1793. I have no clue who Robert Hodgson is!
