If James had only one Christian name and was born in New Zealand, the following birth may be that of your man......

1891/4782   Johnson   James   Martha   Aron

Do you have a printout* for the marriage of James & Elsie as this would provide his parentage.

*Cheaper, may contain more information and can be e-mailed to you.

Hi again Redangel

Just wanted to ask if you know who raised the children of James and Elsie JOHNSON after their Mum passed away (the children were very young at the time). ?

*  Or, if they lived apart from their father during their younger years, did they re-connect with him at a later date ?

-----

It's difficult to find the correct James JOHNSON with so little information.    I have maybe a clue to his occupation from electoral rolls but that requires lots more "digging".

There was mention in a Wairarapa ? newspaper in an article referring to "potential" soldiers, of a "reclassification for a James JOHNSON in 1918",  but it seems he didn't serve in WW1 ...  I haven't found a service record for him.
