Conversion of a file, advice please
« on: Wednesday 15 February 17 09:47 GMT (UK) »
After I broke a digital camera, I saved all the photos from its card to a DVD.  I have a file -12 pages of A4 - which I made by copying the summary list of contents and pasting it into Word.  It consists of columns: serial number, date and time taken, type of file [JPG], size in KB.

I would now like to add titles as a column but do not know how to approach this.  Can anyone  please advise if it is possible, and how to do it, in plain language?

Ainslie

This shows how to add a column to a table in Word which, if I understand correctly, is what you want to do

Hope that helps !

Not sure if you are adding a column, or adding titles to the columns?
To add column titles:

Click, and highlight the top row.
Click on Table Tools, Layout - then Insert Above.

Edit the cells as appropriate!

BUT try it out on something else first - not on your large file  ;)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

No need?
Just close without saving, and your file will still be in it's original state. ;D

That's absolutely true, but accidents do happen, and if you save it by mistake then  :'( :'(  I'd rather be safe than sorry.  You only need to set up a new file with, say, a 3 column table, enter a couple of lines, then insert another column to see how it works.  :)

In theory yes, but ....
it's too easy to click on SAVE before remembering "I shouldn't have done that !"
(That is also one of the definitions of a 'split second'  ;D )

Whether photo restorations, spreadsheets, or any other documents, if you are "just trying something out" then it is always better to make a copy to play with.

No backup needed, no paper wasted.

Thanks for all those.  It seems that I have copied and pasted as a picture, so it is not responding as a table.  Does this need a different approach, perhaps conversion of some sort?
