William describes himself as a hawker....born Nottingham  ???

Well, strictly speaking Ann describes him.  Perhaps she was mistaken as to his birthplace and assumed it was the same as her own (if e.g. they had met in Nottingham).

But for him to go from age 25 in 1909 to 49 two years later would be surprising indeed!

I don't know how to do a snip on this device, but to me the signature of William Henry Squires on the 1909 marriage looks a decent match with that on the military document posted upthread.

Thanks Josey :)

So... The 1909 marriage signatures appear to provide a good match to the William who ends up in Portsmouth, and also to Ann Squires from the Reading census.

Leaving just William's wildly varying ages, birthplaces and occupations to worry about, then!

This is definitely a case where Rebecca needs that 1914 birth certificate for Henry.

During 1911 it was decided to reorganize the police forces of the newly formed Union of South Africa on the lines of that used in the former Cape Colony. With effect from 1 April 1913, (Act 14 of 1912), two police forces were formed within the Union of South Africa:

South African Mounted Rifles (SAMR). The SA Mounted Rifles was formed by the amalgamation of the Cape Mounted Police (CMP), Cape Mounted Rifles (CMR), Natal Police (NP) and Transvaal Police (TP).
