GEORGE SIMCOX GREENGROCER WOOLTON LIVERPOOL
« on: Sunday 26 February 17 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone possibly have access to any Trade directories for Woolton Liverpool ? I am researching George Alexander and Lilian Simcox who lived at 28 Linkstor Road, Woolton Liverpool. Records of the late 1930s record George A Simcox as a self employed greengrocer....I wondered where his shop was situated ?

Hi I have found an article on the page of a book about the Beatles called The day John met Paul it says. It's four minutes past nine when a greengrocer named Stan Gerkin draws up his horse and wagon on Manor rd for his first stop of day.A tall slim man of few words he conducts his business
under the name of Mr Simcox he stands on Woolton street corners each day under his gray flat cap
selling fruits and vegetables. There are a few more lines about him.The date is Saturday July 6th 1957
This may be your man he probably kept his horse in Manor Rd which is not far from his address.
You can find the article if you google the day John met Paul, look for beatlelogy-inst.ucoz.ru
It looks like he just sold from his wagon.Cheers clwyd2.

Very interesting
Albert Edward Gerken lived in 7 Island Road, Garston and was a Sugar Refiner Manager (presumably at Tate and Lyle ).
I wonder if Stanleyl was related - Garston to Woolton is around 2 - 3 miles ...

just checked  Albert Edward Gerken married Edith Maud Bowcock 1903 - Stanley was b 1912 mmn Bowcock
so there is a Garston connection

I remember Stan and his horse and cart from when I was a child in the late 1950s. They used to appear every Saturday morning in our road and all the neighbours would queue up to buy their veggies from him. I think the horse knew the route so well, and when and where to stop, that he could have done it on his own!
