Just a wee clarification
« on: Monday 27 February 17 19:43 GMT (UK) »
Dear Sir or Ma'am:

Is it acceptable to enquire here to date two photographs I have? Just wanted to see if the dates are correct or not.

I want to help to settle a differing opinion and I know Rootschat is a good place to ask. :)

I would like to know if it is OK to do this. If so, I will post two photos here.

Thank your for your consideration,

Tees

Thank you, Sarah, for replying to my post! Splendid!

I will post two photos or three here.

I only want to know what approximate years these photos possibly were taken so to narrow which family members they supposed to be. I have two family branches disagreeing on who's who.

The only way to settle this issue is to "date" the photos.

This is a friendly reminder for all of us RCers to date and name people in the photos for future generations.

I sincerely welcome all inputs from you, the experts, here.

Kind regards,

Tees

I am starting with two photos.

Were the women in both photos the same person or two different women?

As to children, going by their clothes, would we be able to date?

Your expertise would be a big help to me.

Thank YOU for your help in advance. Looking forward to hear from you.

With kind regards,

Tees

I don't think they are the same lady...I would say the first one could be late 1890s and the other one is earlier possibly late 1880s but Jim would have a better idea. Could they be Mother and Daughter as there is a likeness.

Thank you for your attempt to date the photos for me, Treetotal. Much appreciated!!

I never thought about that angle.

One branch of my family believes that the first photo was taken in early 1870s.

And second photo you might be correct---it might be between late 1880s and early 1900s.

Looking forward to hear from Jim.

Thanks for your kind reply,

Tees

I don't have my book with me at the moment but I have just done a bit of research and found a T.P. Cummings listed at that address in 1899/1900 and 1906/7 It's a good idea to post the backs as they hold clues to dating.

Hi Treetotal,

You meant the firm that did the photographs? I was wondering whether they would have a record book for the photos.

I vaguely remember reading some posts on RC about this---some shops keeps good records of their photos and listed who purchased them, etc..

Now we are getting closer to settle the disagreements.

Hope someone could help us out.

I just wish someone could bother to pencil or pen the names to the back of photos and dates as well back then.

Now I realise I have a new project to do: do that for all of my photos. LOL

Kind regards,

Tees

PS Will ask the relative of mine to see if she could trouble someone in her family to scan the backs of these photos. We will be hearing from her during the weekdays (apparently, she does not like answering the e-mails during the week-ends). Will keep us posted on this subject.

1870's for both & I would suggest late decade.
Both taken in the same studio as you can see from the backdrop.
Not the same lady but possibly her mother.
