Help required information on Hugh Anderson of Neilston a writer
« on: Wednesday 08 March 17 05:44 GMT (UK) »
Would be happy to  get any information on Hugh Anderson he died in 1751. I estimate his birth 1695 . So I think  he was in Neilston in c 1730 working as a writer.
I have little information on Hugh Anderson. I have not been able to find his birth or death or records.
Hugh Anderson his father was Alexander Anderson , his mother was Elizabeth Trent the family were in Mooray. I think that Hugh was most likely born Mooray 1695 through 1710.

  thankyou Ellecat

I am unsure if this helps, but a "writer" in Scotland could mean a lawyer. If you have access to Find My Past there appear to be lots of Anderson births for the period you mention at Drainie, Moray. Scotland  There is a Hugh Anderson born 25 March  1713  at Drainie, Moray father? Anderson.

Many thanks for your suggestions . I  had thought a writer to the signet implied lawyer
, but I will certainly look. Thanks Ellecat

A Writer to the Signet is a fancy Edinburgh lawyer, a Writer is indeed a lawyer.

Ellecat,  try NAS, the National Archives of Scotland site or even the Writers to the Signet site.

I assume you have checked for a will. In Scotland, Hugh Anderson in Neilston means he lives there. Hugh Anderson of Neilston means he owns a property of that name. If so you should check the Register of Sasines which documents land transactions. It is also worth going to the on-line catalogue of the National Records of Scotland and entering his name and time period to see what it might throw up (as Skoosh recommends). Also worth checking the burgess roll for the burgh nearest to him as he may have been admitted a burgess.
