Hi clancam37,

You don't by any chance have a name for the father of John Burns? Any other clues to help us, such as an occupation for John?

Names of any siblings of John Burns?

Hello again clancam37

Yes, there are people who would would like to help you with this  (and it might not be as difficult as you image).   :)

And just a little more information from you would assist us enormously in our efforts.  ;D

So far you've given here information for three generations ... which hints that you may have more ?

- John BURNS (a.k.a. "Jock" )
- maybe born c. 1911

- Mabel (or Mabel Sarah) - mother of John Burns

- Lawrence (Laurence) and Colin - sons of John BURNS.

- other :  May have lived at Opunake (Openake) area ?

John Burns - 1976/37494

Was his Mother Mabel?

Hello...

I suspect his mother was Elizabeth...

Elizabeth King BURNS - Taruheru cemetery

I looked up the 1976 death notice for the John BURNS - 1976/37494 that you mentioned. The notice said he had a brother James in Gisborne and a sister, the late Mary BURNETT, in Wellington.

I checked Gisborne and Wellington cemetery websites, plus the BURNETT to BURNS marriage record, and the names and ages fit the BURNS family on the following passenger list...

Auckland arrivals - 1926 - Mahana - Image 123 of 209

Scotland's People website is the next place to visit if you want to trace this family further although, as there's no sign so far of a Mabel or Laurence/Lawrence or Colin, I'm with KHP and suspect it's a dead end.

Hi clancam

I'm guessing that the John (or Jock) you are seeking, is the man mentioned in his Mother's death notice in Tasmania - 8 July 1944.  ???

re :  John BURNS

It does seem though that the marriage of his parents, occurred in Tasmania in the year 1914.

clamcan ... I can't see births for Tasmania (later than about 1900) :

The BURNS appear to be a Catholic family so one might expect that the son John / Jock, was born after 1914 ?

If the death notice for Mabel names her children in order of birth, then "Jock" is the eldest.
