Cottam/Banks
« on: Thursday 09 March 17 18:33 GMT (UK) »
I have a real 'Brick Wall' family here. Nothing gives a concrete answer! I have done a lot of research and am no nearer to sorting it out.
Here goes!
Joseph Rowland Cottam who dies in Rotherham 1902, was born in Wakefield around 1843 - 1847. I can't find a birth for that name but there is one for a Joseph Rowland Banks in Wakefield in 1847 which I think is one and the same! On the 1851 census in Nettleham, Lincs, I believe he is there as the son of Frances Cammack.
I sent for the birth certificate of Joseph Banks, Wakefield 1847 and it gives his father as Robert Banks and mother as Frances Banks nee 'Campbell'- born in Wakefield Union.
On the 1851 census there is also another daughter Alice E Cammack or Banks? born 1850 in Sheffield - again I can't find a birth registration.
There are more problems further on but thought I would start with this!

Help please - Loz

Have you got your Joseph Rowland Cottam on any censuses? Does he marry, if so who does he name as his father on his marriage cert?

(not spotting him on 1901 at all....)
(nor other censuses - what name does he use? Where did Wakefield as his pob come from?)

I see the 1902 Rotherham death has him as Joseph Roland Cottam, and age 50, thus born about 1852.

There is also a 1900 death in Rotherham for another Joseph Roland Cottam age 0 - a son?

Wow so quick - yes all these results are what I have found.  On the 1871 he was Joseph Rowland Cottam living in Manchester  unmarried Grocer's shopman.  So between 1861 and 1871 he changed his name from Banks to Cottam?
On his marriage certificate to Elizabeth Salter - he gives father's name as Robert Cottam and occupation 'Civil Engineer' - that seems a bit strange in those days!
On the birth certificate for Joseph Rowland Banks the father Robert Banks's occupation is 'Land Surveyor' - again seems a bit strange - in between he is an agricultural Labourer!
