RAF/ARMY uniform identification. Help please!
« on: Thursday 09 March 17 21:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm needing a little help to identify uniforms.

The person beleived to be in these photos was the same man. (The one on the left in the photo of the two men).

But from the very little that I have learned the uniforms are baffling to me.

(Note: I am in the process of applying for any military records that gov.uk may have as none can be found online)

In a marriage certificate in 1936 he says he is a Lance Corporal (Artillery) R.A.F 32 (F) sqn Biggin Hill. Then in 1938-9 he is a Sargeant in 218 sqn Farnborough.

Upon asking a good friend who was in the military, it appears the uniform in the photo ONE looks RAF but photo TWO looks Army (Artillery)?

Can anyone help? Perhaps in guessing period of photo's taken also? If it is him it would have been between about 1929-1939. Age 18-28, born in 1911.

Photo's attached in following posts.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, with my limited knowledge I can say that the second photograph is definitely Artillery, but the chap in the photograph is to me, much to old to be born in 1911 as he is wearing a uniform associated with the Great War era.

Someone will no doubt be along to give you a more concise answer regarding the photographs pretty soon.

Hi Frank. Good to get additional confirmation on the second uniform as Artillery. Which matches his wedding cert as being Artillery, just not the RAF or uniform pertaining to the era. Hmm.

(Just revising/thinking out loud)

Royal Engineer is interesting... He died as a Sgt in a RAF plane crash 1939 as an observer it seems along with the pilot and a RAF wireless operator.

Agree the first one is probably RE.
As has been said no. 2 is RA however this style of uniform was worn into the 1930's but still doesn't look like someone born 1911.

Good morning,

I would say the artillery man photo is ww1 or earlier as he has no medal ribbons. Too old to have enlisted after the war I think.
