Charles Alexander WALKER - Help find on 1911 Census
« on: Sunday 12 March 17 12:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I've been trying to follow a line of my wife's family but have hit a dead end, they seem to just disappear. I just can't find a 1911 census for them.

The family is Charles Alexander Walker born 1860 and his wife Isabella born 1863. They have 6 children, Thomas, Charles Wilfred, Gladys, Marian, George Newton and Margaret Elizabeth born in Jarrow and South Shields.

I think Charles Wilfred Walker may have qualified as a ship's master and gone to America but I'm not sure I have the right person, the 1911 census may help as it will give me his occupation as an 18 year old.

Can anyone with a bit more experience than me find the 1911 census and maybe post a link I can use with my ancestry account?

I can't find any of them after the 1901 census other than the possible ship's master.

Thanks a lot,

Michael

An online tree has Charles as a seaman in Greenwich then.

Try 1911

Isabella Walber in S Shields

and given that the transcription turned the surname of Walker into Walber and birthplace of Jarrow into Sarson, that was a really good find! :-)

Hi All,

Thank you all so much for your help, that is the family I'm looking for.

That 1911 census shows him as an apprentice seaman in the merchant navy so he must be the same man who went on to become a master in 1918.

I'm going to go to the library and have a look at the FindMyPast record, I think that will be him as well. I'm hoping the library access will let me see the record of him going to America as well as my Ancestry account won't let me see that.

Thank you all again for your help, I would not have found that.

So I saw, but though I transcribe a fair bit and appreciate that sometimes the writing is challenging, I DO wonder just how a transcription can be so far from the original!
