FAMILYSEARCH.ORG problems with viewing images of Parish Registers
« on: Monday 13 March 17 10:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone else is having problems with viewing images of Parish Registers on this site.

In the past I have view images of i.e. Duffield, Derbyshire Parish registers, this after registering
my name and e-mail address and then clicking on the small black camera on the right of the results screen.

When you click on this image now you get the following message:-
These images are viewable at
At findmypast. By clicking here you will be leaving FamilySearch.org (fees and other terms may apply).
To signed-in members of supporting organizations.
When using the site at a family history center.

Am I doing something wrong?  and who are "members of supporting organizations"

Over recent years familysearch have come to agreements with other organisations and companies such as Findmypast and Ancestry and others to share data.
This is beneficial to both sides as the companies gain access to transcripts and films etc the LDS own and the LDS gain free access (at family history centers and I believe members of the LDS using their passwords free on line access) to their digital images and records.

Patrons of the LDS (I.E. members of the public rather than Church members) do not get free access to the commercial records unless viewing them at a family History Center run by the LDS

Hi

It is not that long ago that Familysearch were allowed to film some of the Derbyshire Registers.

It would be interesting to know the details of what agreement was made between Derbyshire Record Office and/or the church authorities as to free access for all!

Yet another free resource Gone.

What on earth makes you think that!
The LDS freely share with everyone, if they have digitised the Derbyshire Registers they will make them available free to everyone on their website.

Don't confuse records that the LDS have digitised or microfilmed with records they have arranged access to from third party partners which are only free in the family History Centers.

I would also like to know what you mean by another free resource gone, when the LDS or even when companies like Ancestry or Findmypast digitise records the records are still available in their "home" archive for access. Nothing is lost.

Funny you should say that Spendlove.

Like you, I found the access to the images a bit odd last week.
I was looking at a Derbyshire image one day and got to see the actual register no problem - just clicked on the 'camera' as usual.
The next day I wanted to check the same image again, and even though I was logged in, I got the message about only seeing it at a LDS centre.
Most odd. I don't think they had changed their policy about that particular register overnight!

I hope it was a 'glich', as familysearch seems to be the only site with decent amounts of Derbyshire information - even though it's still not comprehensive, and I have looked at dozens of parish register images on the site, which has been very useful. It will be a very long time until FindMyPast and Ancestry have Derbyshire records I'm afraid.

Funnily enough I just bookmarked the Derbyshire records on FS a few days ago, and I would swear they were freely available at that time:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01jot/

Very strange!

I see that familysearch last updated their Derbyshire records on 28 Feb 2017 - I wonder what they did  :-[
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

Apparently this:

It was this update (received by email) that led me to the page I bookmarked.

I phoned the Derbyshire Records Office this morning and spoke to the duty archivist.

In the case of Derbyshire Records the answer is very clear, Derbyshire Record Office cancelled the contract with Findmypast in favour of a contract with Ancestry.
I am told they will be adding the records online possibly next year.

Here is a short video that explains the LDS take on the subject of digitised records

PS Derbyshire Census Records are available on Familysearch with images but these are supplied by Findmypast and to view the images you need to either be at a Family History Center or subscribe to FindMyPast
