Births 1837-1915 General query
« on: Tuesday 14 March 17 08:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Now that the GRO have the new pilot scheme of showing the mothers maiden name why are some names NOT shown. I can understand a fathers name not being recorded but surely there's no reason not to have a mothers!
Any sensible answers appreciated.

I believe it's due to the children being illegitimate. I have checked a couple of mine born prior to marriages and there's no MMN.

Hi, I'm not sure that's the full answer medpat. I've many children born with parents not married, some recorded with mother's maiden name and others with fathers surname.

After 1875, a father's name would only be shown on the birth certificate of an illegitimate child if he was present at the registration of the birth. In the ansence of the father, only the mother's name would be recorded (and hence no maiden name appear on the GRO indices)
