1798 George Hood R.N., aka Hope? Or Hope & Hood Related, please?
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 12:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I found a George Hood signing a 19th September 1798 letter from Captain Samuel Hood of H.M. Ship Zealous in the newspaper of 26 November 1798 (attached).

The same letter seems to appear in the London Gazette in two pieces, one dated 19th September and the other dated 21st September 1798 signed George Hope (attached, 2 scans).

"George Hood bapt - 25 December 1788 Mother Hope Hood - Broadwinsor, Dorset, England  (Near Bridport West bay harbour)

Hope Hood Bapt - 25 Feb 1765 Father John Hood mother Elizabeth  - Broadwinsor, Dorset, England"

There was a George Hope in the Royal Navy writing to Captain Hood of H.M.S. Zealous, earlier in August 1798 and according to another letter the captain of H.M.S. Zealous was Samuel Hood, Esq.

Looking at the mother's names in the baptism suggests either some previous relationship between the two - Hope and Hood families in the Royal Navy, or either Samuel Hood, or George Hope was also known as George Hood?

Any information please?

Thanks Mark

My Thomsons go back pre -1800 - my 3xGt Grandfather was a Mark Rowe Thomson - further generations all had the names Mark, Rowe, Edwin or George ~ if you spot them -they're mine  :)

Wasn't very clear with my post, but thank-you Captain Hood ;)
