James Hankey
« on: Saturday 18 March 17 11:32 GMT (UK) »
I have a major problem which so far I have been unable to resolve.

It concerns James Hankey but which one. I have one born in 1739 at Grappenhall and another one born in 1744 at Lymm.

One went on to marry Ellen Clayton in 1768 at Grappenhall which leads me to believe it was the James of 1739 but confirmation would obviously help. This James's parents were, I understand, John Hankey & Elizabeth Hall.

Ironically both James's stem from Jonathan Hankey (their grandfather).

Can anyone clarify, many thanks, David

Hi David,

When James dies in 1828, he is listed as being 84 years old. Which makes him 1744.

Ellen was younger. When she died in 1826, she was 78, which makes her born about 1748.

Baptisms (FindMyPast images)

James son of John Hankey of Grappenhall, Yeoman Jun 14th 1739
James son of James Hankey, born 7 Sep, bap 21 Oct 1744, place Lymm

Register for the Parish of Grappenhall for the year of our Lord 1751 (FindMyPast images)
James, son of John Hankey of Latchford, labourer, was buried March 9th

Ages not given but the presence of "... son of ..." normally implies a child.

Thanks for this information but which one married Ellen Clayton?

The info I have on Ellen is that she was born or baptised on 9th April 1745 at Grappenhall and died on 8th Apr 1826 also at Grappenhall.

All this association with Grappenhall leads me to believe that Ellen married the James of 1739 as they both came from the same village but I see Lymm is only 3 miles away from the James of 1744 was born.

What a bloody tangle!!

Latchford to the west of Grappenhall, Lymm to the east. Grappenhall is the name of the parish that includes them both. When you talk about coming from "the same village", are you sure it's the village or the parish?

If the James, bap. Lymm had died, it's unlikely the burial would be recorded as Latchford - unless the family had moved. Have you checked for any further "Hankey, Lymm" baptisms to show they are still at that location.

It's a process of elimination - with no guarantee of a positive result.

Not sure where you have this date for Ellen from, but there is no baptism in Grappenhall?

Had a look at the marriage in 1768 - difficult to make out one of the witnesses.

Is it an attempt to write "William Hanky"?. A William, son of John Hankey, Yeoman, Grappenhall was baptised 17 Nov 1736 - elder brother of James bap 1739?.

I can only spot 2 James born in that area - James 1739, father John and James 1744, father James. The 1751 burial states clearly " ... son of John ..." which almost certainly indicates a child.

On a personal note, I found a 1785 marriage of gt/gt etc. grandparent of mine and delighted to see the bride's name - pretty unusual. Imagine the disappointment when I found 3 potential brides born within 7 years of each other, same parish. One ruled out by burial stating " ..daughter of ..." and father's name matched one of the baptisms. Another ruled out by marriage where witness name, reasonably unusual, matched baptism. But nonetheless you are left wondering "Have I identified the correct baptism>"

No, it says William Hoult - he was baptised at Grappenhall in Feb 1741/2, son of John Hoult, tanner

Hi, PrawnCocktail

The baptism date was passed onto me by another co-researcher who has been a little unreliable in the past. However, since my last message a different researcher has told me Ellen was christened in Great Sankey on 4th Mar 1749 with a source of England Select Births & Christenings 1538-1975 and a burial date of 12th April 1826 at Grappenhall.

Again with the Grappenhall connection it makes me lean more to James of 1739.
