Slade Road Gravelly Erdington
« on: Sunday 19 March 17 12:57 GMT (UK) »
On her will made out in May 1905 Rosina Hole shows her address as 322  Slade Road Gravelly Hill Warwickshire. Please could someone check the electoral roll to see who was living there. I am unable to find  her or the address on the 1901 census. The 1901 search for her was subject of an earlier topic.   She was at a different address in 1911 and died in 1915.
Thank you

Most men didn't get the vote until 1911 & women 1919 so anyone not eligible to vote at that address in 1905 won't appear on the ER.
The first date that Slade Rd. appears on the ER is 1912.

Thank you for that Jim. It is frustrating that I can find neither Rosina or 322 Slade Road on the 1901 census. I wonder if this is coincidence? When she made her will she had at least one son and one daughter alive but left everything to the daughter. When she died the gross value of her estate was over£100,000 in todays' values. The son died in 1907 almost certainly childless. The daughters line died out in 1981.  She claimed to be a widow on the will which she was not  and both she and her husband came from very humble backgrounds. Where Rosina got her money from is a complete mystery and I doubt it will ever be solved

Have you got this info. from the will itself or just what it says on the Probate Calendar?
If the latter it doesn't say it was left to her daughter only that she was the Executrix.
To see how it was distributed you will need to see it. Apologies if you have seen it.
It's quite difficult to say what value £1000 in 1915 is today because there are many differing factors ie. houses were cheaper in comparison but clothing more expensive but still a tidy sum nevertheless.
An ancestor of mine was a housekeeper to a single gentleman & when he died she copped for the lot.
This was in the 1890's.
When she died a few years later she left over £1500.
Maybe whoever she was working for earlier did the same.

I got the information from the will. In 1911 she was a housekeeper in Erdington to John Shipway, a fine art dealer which lends creedence to your thoughts on how she got the money. I could not find him in 1901 either.

You might conclude that as she was a housekeeper in 1911 she wasn't in possession of that amount of money at that time.

This 1905 map shows 322 Slade Rd. on the junction of Albert & Fentham Rd.(on the left by the "A" in road) just below Aston Workhouse.
They look pretty new as there is a lot of open land still.

She made the will in 1905 so presumably had some money by then, or possibly the promise of some. Her daughter was named Rose Ives Ermyne. These names appear nowhere else in the family. Her birth certificate shows Rosina's husband as the father but I strongly suspect this is not the case. I guess we will never know.
