Are Caroline Emma Willis and Caroline Rebecca Willis the same person?
« on: Monday 20 March 17 18:46 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to unravel the new family for my tree. I have John Chapman born 1848 in Woodnesbourgh Kent. He married a Caroline Willis in 1867 at Chalton Church Dover. The actual marriage in the parish register can be viewed on findmypast. On the marriage it gives the name of the bride as Caroline Rebecca Willis. Father's name Thomas.
I cannot find any records for Caroline and she does not appear on Freebmd. I can find a birth for Caroline Emma Willis with a fathers name of Thomas.
Is this the same person as I am trying to identify the correct mothers maiden name for my tree. On the GRO index it gives the mothers maiden name as Finn.
I would like someone else's opinion on the family.
Many thanks in advance.

Is this the family in 1861?  If so, Harriett Mutton is given as mother, although if she is her age must have been recorded incorrectly - perhaps 80. If she is Mary's mother, unless she remarried, that would make Mary's maiden name Mutton.

Dover RG 9; Piece: 548; Folio: 7; Page: 8

Thomas Willis   58
Mary A Willis   42
Mary A Willis   16
Thomas Willis   13
Caroline Willis   11
Henry Willis   8
Eliza Willis   6
Harriett Mutton   50

That is the right family the surname of Mary's mother has been mistranscribed as Mutton when it is actually Sutton. Everything fits apart from the name of Caroline. I still can't find a birth record for Caroline Rebecca so I am going round and round in circles.
Thanks for the input.

Have you found her after her marriage on any census, where does she give for her POB and date of birth?

Caroline R Chapman can clearly be read on the 1881 census. Place of birth given Dover Kent. ref 1005/6/5.
She is also listed as Caroline R on 1901 census  ref 845/63/16.
Hope this helps

Looking at Caroline's marriage to John Chapman the witnesses are John and Susanna Merton.
Susannah Maria Willis married John Merton in 1861.

The Caroline Emma whose birth you have found mmn Finn is in the 1851 Census living Tower Hill, Charlton, with parents Thomas and Mary Ann. The family also includes Caroline's sister Susannah M Willis.

Thomas Willis married Mary Ann Finn 26 July 1834 in Barham, which is where some of their children were born
Cenusus ref HO107/1632/F152/p41 name transcribed as Williss.

There is only one Caroline Chapman listed in freebmd deaths as 1905 Dover so middle name given in the index there which would have helped.

So is that a different family that emeltom has found, as according to the 1861 all the children were born Dover?
