The 6+ (7+ in fact) children were supposed to be with Mary.

Sarah King is in Portsmouth in 1891, recorded as a widow - Ida, Percy and her father in law George with her.  RG12/868/29/9.

D = Discharged. Invalided - because of sickness or something related.

Greenwich Pensioner in jim's post and the ADM title of the register in Jen B's post both indicate a Royal Navy man not a soldier.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

We need the poster to give us more info on them.
Greenwich pensioner did make me wonder if I've got the right family.

I'd imagine there is a good chance that Sarah and Mary were married to different Williams.

I've found him in all the subsequent censuses bar 1881 & he's living with Mary & their children.
Can we have details ?
Do you know Mary's maiden name ?

Correction - Greenwich and ADM apply equally well to Royal Marines.

In 1871, William King from Devizes (as 1881) is on board HMS Princess Charlotte, Sergeant Royal Marines, off Hong Kong.

Indeed, two William's is the most likely, one a RM (widow in Portmouth also indicative) who looks like the one found in censuses and the discharge register, the other a soldier/militiaman about whom we know little until ladynicotine comes back.
