Pontefract burial prior to 1859
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 10:20 BST (UK) »
It's my understanding that Pontefract opened its municipal cemetery in 1859. I have relative buried in Pontefract in the early 1850s. The records state St Giles but as that church is in the town centre and has no attached burial plots where did the burials take place after the service at St Giles. I'm guessing in the old parish graveyard at the 'Cromwellised' All Saints but would like a local to confirm. Thanks.

A name or names would help, together with a year range  :)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

As it was a general enquiry about burial practices in Pontefract I didn't think specific individual records would help.

But here's one - John HODGSON service at St Giles. Where was he buried?

West Yorkshire Archive Service, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England; Yorkshire Parish Records; Old Reference Number: D40/38 West Yorkshire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1985
Burials in the Parish of Pontefract in the County of York in the Year 1853
No 1848
John Hodgson Pontefract May 4 65 Rev. J J Toly Curate

Pontefract Cemetery records start 1 August 1859 when the new cemetery opened. After 1859 there's a church burial record and matching cemetery record.
Thanks
David

Thanks - I'd not seen that thread
" All Saints Graveyard, much of which no longer exists." could help explain my disbelief at their being so many apparent burials in a tiny graveyard.

Covered by rosie99 - I was going to suggest that you contact Pontefract & District FHS.  :)
