Maria Aust, nee Grist, of Bath and Hemington
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 18:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about my 4x great aunt Maria Grist.
Christened; 2nd October 1803, Hemington, Somerset.
Married; 1st October 1831, St James, Bath, Octavius Aust.
In 1834 she, and her husband, were witnesses at the marriage of my 3x great grandmother Temperance Grist to Robert Moger Fussell at Radstock. But then the trail goes cold.

Hi,

There is also a Uriah Aust who was transported for 14 years.

Uriah Aust
Vessel:   Earl Grey
Convicted Date:   6 Aug 1842
Voyage Date:   4 Oct 1842
Colony:   Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land)
Place of Conviction:   Somerset, England

The above Uriah was convicted of robbery, unfortunately he was also only 21 years of age (b1821), thereby making him 10 when he married (1831)? This I believe makes him the wrong chap.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Agree, not very likely!  Surprising how many there are about with that unusual name.

Hi,

According to Somerset Marriage Registers for Bath St James, he was Uriah Octavius Aust.

Uriah Aust married again on 13th January 1842 to Elizabeth Buckland.
He was a widower, and Yeoman, of 22 Walcot Street.

Ancestry has the above marriage taking place at St Michaels, Bath. Uriah's age is given as 45, therefore born about 1796/97. The marriage bond (dated 28th Sept 1831) for the marriage in 1831 to Maria Grist gives Uriah's occupation then as Mason.

I think that they end up in London. 1841 Census (HO107/675/9/28/51) has an Uriah Aust (age 25) a mason with wife Maria (age 30), both born outside of county. They are living in Portland Street, St Marylebone. The second marriage is I believe yet again another Uriah Aust!

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

On the marriage bond Uriah Octavius is 21.

There are 2 Uriah Austs in Corsham alone!

Hi,

Looks like Maria Aust dies in Dec qtr 1862. The new GRO index gives age as 60.

Aust, Maria; Chelsea Reg Dist; Age 60; Volume 1a Page 157.

They are in Chelsea in 1861 & 1871, although in 61 Maria appears to be down as Emma for some reason!

1861 (RG9/39/91/28) Uriah shown as age 45 and born Camden Tow, Middlesex & Maria/Emma as age 44 born Bath.

1871 (RG10/91/35/17) Uriah (Wiah on Ancestry!) is aged 57 and A stone mason & now born in Camberwell! He is with another wife Ellen.

I cannot see them in 1851 though!

Uriah possibly dies later in 1871 aged 58. This from freeBMD:

Aust, Uriah; Deaths June Qtr 1871; Chelsea reg dist; Volume 1a Page 189.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Thank you all for your responses.
I was not surprised to find out that the groom was a mason - quite a few of those in my family tree.
Now that you have given me an address I shall try and see if he can be located in the Bath Directories.
I shall also investigate whether the remarriage is of my man, implying that Maria had died, or whether it was one of his namesakes!
