Vernon in Stoney Stanton
« on: Tuesday 28 March 17 15:33 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I am trying to find a birth record for Amos Vernon, born about 1816 in Stoney Stanton. Also his marriage to Mary Ann Mason from Enderby. I have so far found 4 children from this marriage, Ann b 1839, Charles David b 1844, Eliza b 1846 and George Edward b 1849. I have Amos and Mary Ann on all census up to 1902 when he died in Stoney Stanton. From the census information it appears that he was born in Stoney Stanton and lived there all his life. He was a master framework knitter and also owned a grocer shop. He is buried in Stoney Stanton churchyard along with Mary Ann.

Just beat me to the marriage.

There are variations of Varnam/Varnham/Varnon which, in some instances, became Vernon

Amos Varnam
Baptism date: 08 Dec 1816
place: Stoney Stanton
Father: John
Mother: Bridget

Same parents at Stoney Stanton:
John Varnham - 28 Oct 1803
Edward Varnham - 08 Dec 1804
Charlotte Varnon - 15 Mar 1807
Eliza Varnon - 25 Dec 1808
Charoline Varnon - 20 Mar 1811
John Varnam - 14 Nov 1819
Hannah Varnam - 16 Feb 1823
Charles Varnam - 11 Jul 1824
Matilda Varnam 09 Sep 1827 - 09 Sep 1827

Although Amos married as Vernon, he is recorded as Varnam in 1841 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQYL-LG5

Then Vernon from 1851 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGFQ-GJ7

There is a baptism for Mary Mason (transcribed as Marson) in Enderby on 12 May 1816, daughter of William Bentley Mason and Mary.

Three others:

Anne - 14 Nov 1817
Hephzibah - 29 Feb 1824
William 1820 - 30 Jan (father William Bentley but mother Elizbeth)

1841 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQY2-LLW

Thank you so much for your help David  :) I do have that 1841 census record, also have 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891. He doesn't appear with Mary on the 1881 census but I did find a missing person report for an Amos Vernon, last seen at Nuneaton railway station on 14 Feb 1881 boarding a train for Manchester. From the details given I think this was most likely him. He is back with Mary in the 1891 census. He died on the 18 September 1892. The information regarding Mary's baptism is looking very hopeful! Thank you  :)
