Patrick Magurren.
« on: Wednesday 29 March 17 04:52 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information about a Patrick Magurren. In 1869 he entered into a partnership with James Pedlow, Edward Roach and John McClelland to operate a grocery business at 674 George St. Sydney. NSW. In 1871 he withdrew from the partnership.

I cannot find any other information about him. No record of a birth, marriage or death in NSW.

He is not the Patrick Alfred Magurren born in 1868 and died in 1934 in Sydney.

Geoff.
Attwell. Roach. Coustley. Beard. Kinsela. Ward.

Hi Geoff,
The timing is a bit off but ...
NSW BDM http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/Pages/family-history/family-history.aspx

1867 Death McGURRAN Patrick J, father Thomas, mother Margaret at Glebe reg 2410/1867

Also registered as MacGURRAN

Can use wild-cards in searching as there seems to be many different spellings.  eg M*GURR?N
where * stands for 0 or more letters and ? stands for exactly 1 letter.

Ros

adding : Thomas MAGURRIN married Margaret MACKEL in 1861 at St George reg 1062/1861 so above death is possibly their baby/child.
So no help at all  :(

Here’s some more possible sightings.

NSW Electoral Roll 1878 WEST SYDNEY
Terence McGURREN, household, Rose Street

Sands 1870 Sydney Street Directory
George Street (Swan Street intersection between 668 and 670 George Street,  and Goulburn Street intersection between 700 and 702 George Street)
674 George Street, Pedlow, Magurren and Co, grocers.
676 & 678 George Street, L and E Hordern, drapers

Sands 1869 has L and E Hordern at 674 and 676 George, and 678 & 680 George as vacant.

The closing date for submitting entries to Sands Directories was end of October of the year prior,  so the 1869 entries were as at October 1868,  and the 1870 entries were as at October 1869 ….

UNCLAIMED Letters  NSW Govt Gazette 24 July 1873  Pg 2033, lowest section of first column (from left).  (Several pages earlier the heading showed ‘COLONIAL Letters) so perhaps unclaimed colonial letters awaiting collection

Magurran P.,  Lion Town.    (JM says .... yes, two 'a' and no 'e'  :) )

Hi,

The 30th November NSW Police Gazette has property stolen on the 26th from Terence Magurran, the landlord of Omnibus the Hotel in Parramatta Street.

Gerry

PS: corrected to Terence from Thomas.

Corrected again, the Gazette was 30th November 1870.

NSW Electoral Roll 1878 THE GLEBE
Patrick MCGUCKIN, household, Edward Street, Balmain

NSW ER 1902 DALLEY,  Polling at Balmain North
Two people, slightly different spelling for their surname, but same address.
James Patrick MCGUCKIN, 10 Little Stephen Street, clerk
Johannah MCGUICKIN 10 Little Stephen Street, domestic duties

I wonder if there’s any connection to the following NSW BDM death registration indexed as:
1888,  # 2337, MCGUCKIN Patrick, died Balmain

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13687300  SMH 23 May 1888
Patrick McGuckin was aged 73 years, when he died 22 May 1888, at his residence, Maraghfeldt Cottages, 26 Campbell St, Balmain. He left a loving wife, family and a large circle of friends.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13687374  SMH 23 May 1888, funeral to Balmain Catholic Cemetery and same page several other notices shows family members include James Patrick (son) and Phillip MILLER (son in law) and Jasper SCARD (son in law).

OF COURSE, I am simply arm chair speculating that this Patrick MCGUCKIN and our OP’s Patrick MAGURREN are one and the same, and I have NOTHING to actually support that notion.

Mrs MILLER was Catherine MACGUCKIN or MCGUCKIN when marrying Philip MILLER in 1884 registered Glebe as per the two entries at NSW BDM online (#2474)

Catherine was MCGUCKEN on the Early Church Records index of baptisms, daughter of Patrick and Mary A, 1857, volume 142A  line 2317

Martha was MCGUCKIN, and MACGUCKIN daughter Patrick and Mary, civil birth registration 1860, registered Sydney #1033

James P MCGUFFIN, and MACGUFFIN birth, 1863, #3011, Chippendale

William J, McGUCKIN, and MACGUCKIN birth 1865, #3643, Redfern

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/Pages/family-history/family-history.aspx

JM notes that until about WWI the deputy registrars at various locations right across NSW were recording information that was provided orally.  The BDM clerks wrote into large ledger books which faced them (and not the informant) and they asked the questions and recorded the info the informant provided.   The counters were often 4 ft high and almost as wide.    :D   I am sure there were very few people who could read any clerk's longhand scribble upside down and from a distance, particularly if they were holding the baby on their hip and watching over other children while standing at that counter.
