Walter Robert Scotter (b. 1879 Norwich) Missing Death
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 09:09 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find the death of this man?

He was born in 1879 in Norwich, son of William Frederick and Jane (nee Willis).

He had 2 siblings - Frederick William (1881 - 1968) and David John (1883 - 1908).

1911 census has parents reporting 3 children with 2 dead.  David John (known as John) is one of them and Walter Robert must be the other.

I believe Walter Robert was in the Rifle Brigade but I can't find his death anywhere.

Thanks
Ruth

Thanks Rosie

I believe he also joined up in 1898 so clearly didn't last long!   ;D

When is he last appearing on a census to narrow it down?

There's a chance the other child died by 1911 is one yet to be discovered (ie born and died young)
and not Walter but will see if can find Walter first!

What about the daughter Emily 22 from the 1891 census - wouldn't she be another sister or was she from a previous marriage?

I might be getting confused as the family is listed under surname Howes.

Wouldn't it then say 4 children born, not 3?

Hi

Last time 1891 with parents at 5 Water Lane, Norwich.

The enumerator made an error and the family are down as Howes as the enumerator has just 'ditto'd' the family above ( RG12/1520/122 p10)

Emily who is down as a sibling is in fact an aunt (sister of Walter's father William)  - think the enumerator was having a bad day

Walter stayed with the Rifle Brigade for 31 days.  He names his father as William, who paid for his discharge, plus two younger siblings Frederick and John.  His papers are available to view via FindMyPast.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Yes you're quite right, typed before brain in gear!

There is a Mr W Scotter on a passenger list 5 Sep 1906 - Liverpool to New York.
