John Bray birth
« on: Monday 03 April 17 22:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am totally confused again :-\  John Bray married Rebecca Bray 20 June 1797 at St Martins, Leicestershire.
John Bray. Bachelor of the Parish of Broughton Astley
Aged. 21. A Grazier.
Rebecca BRAY of this Parish. Spinster aged. 21.

Now here is where I get totally confused.  Their burial records for the same parish have the ages quite different, making John a good 20 years older than Rebecca

 REBECCA BRAY / died DECEMBER 17th 1816 / aged 52 years / also her husband JOHN BRAY / died MARCH 10th 1815 / aged 72 years.

Would they be the same couple?  Dates just are not adding up.

Are you looking at images or just transcribed information?

If transcribed, then could they have got it wrong?

England, select births and christenings has a baptism for a John Bray on 28th February 1743 at Broughton Astley, parents John Bray and Eliz.

If baptised and born in 1743, then that looks like the death age 72 in 1815

Transcribed images.  Yes I wondered that myself..errors.
Even Rebecca's death gives her age out by 10 years, something just not adding up.  Her parents William Bray and Sarah Page of Leire, Christening 1765, unless she was Christened later in life?
I think they may of just guessed their ages.

Now there is meant to be a probate for John, this may give some clues.

If it actually said 'of full age' i.e. 21 years or older, then they might just have transcribed it as 21.

The marriage Allegation image states that John Bray is aged 21, a bachelor of Broughton Astley and is a Grazier.  Rebecca is also said to be 21 and a spinster.  It doesn't actually state "21 years and upwards".  And to add to the confusion, the Bond says that John is going to marry Elizabeth Bray  ;D Images for the marriage entry, and the Bond and Allegation are available on FindMyPast.

John's will - image available on FindMyPast - leaves everything to his wife Rebecca - he dies 10 March 1815.

Added:  Rebecca's will is also on FindMyPast, and is very detailed - 8 pages plus codicil.  :D

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The burial entry for John Bray - 15 March 1815 at Broughton Astley does NOT give an age.  There are no ages given for the whole of 1815 in the images available on FindMyPast.

Here are the burial records for St Martins Church if anyone interested.  Unless they have john's age wrong.
