Thanks thats a great help.

Now that leaves a gap - I have him in 1911 census
Finding his war service may be an isse and what about before 1921?

Closed, I believe means no yet aged100 - so born 1917-1939 - but I stand to be corrected.
So was there a child? There's a Jack Howarth mothers name Howarth Burnley registry 1919 - but I shouldnt go jumping to conclusions.

Hmm - never answers just more questions!

Coming back to this 2 years later and ..yippee... new records available.
I found that John Smith served in West Riding Regiment. Injured around mid April 1918 at Ypres.
Unfortunately none of his military records appear to have survived except pensions and medals.

Would appreciate a look for any newspaper obit and grave please. John Smith born 11 Aug 1888 Westby, Lancs. Died 5 Jun 1926 Earby, Lancs.
Was his death directly related to his wounds - if so this should be a war grave, but not on wargraves register.

I cannot see a mention of his death in online newspapers.  The only way to establish the cause of his death is the death certificate, you can get a PDF copy which would be cheaper.

Thanks for looking at newspapers - it was just a vague hope that an obit might have mentioned something.
I cant get a grave lookup from Pendle in current circumstances - have to wait for normality, Death is registered at Barlick according to Lanc UKDMD lookup, hopefully buried at  Barlick or Earby.
Interestingly John and his wife lived in Chapel St Salterforth before he joined up. She stayed there until after his death and she then married Herbert Riddiough who lived round the corner from her. He lived with his parents in Salterforth before the war, returned to their house after the war and served alongside one of his brothers and John Smith in the W Rid Reg.
