Disappearing George Martin
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 14:47 BST (UK) »
I'm struggling to get anywhere on finding any information on my 2 X great grandfather, George Martin, born 1859.

Kindly rootschatters found the marriage between him and my 2 X great grandmother, Mary Dixon in 1880 at St Albans, Earsdon and that his father was given as James.

I thought that this would help me in hunting George down but sadly not.  I have him living with Mary in 1881 in Blyth, occupation Boilersmith but then he disappears.

Mary remarries in 1890's but is living with her parents and children in 1891 in Blyth and is listed as Mary Martin and as married.

I can find another George in the 1901 census, living in Wallsend with an Alice Martin, his occupation is given as Boilersmith also but different year of birth, 1861.  Looking at the children living with George and Alice I can't seem to find their births registered under Martin.

I'm wondering if this is the same George Martin and both he and Mary were living bigamously with other partners.

Anyone got any tips on trying to solve the mystery?

Mary remarries in 1890's

Who did she marry?

Just to clarify is he George Smith and changes his name to Martin or is he George Martin by birth?

Apologies Millipede, kept losing my message as I was typing and inadvertently typed George Smith.  Now amended to George Martin as that's the name given on his marriage details to Mary in 1880 and the census in 1881.  Smith was a different generation.

Apologies for the confusion.

No problem.

Looking at the George/Alice census one of the children is Mildred 12 so she should be in 1891 somewhere age 2 possibly with mother Alice but under what name  :-\

Yes I thought Mildred might help, but couldn't find her birth either.

George Arthur Martin born 1904 has mothers name Baines but the Martin children on 1901 as you say are difficult to birth.

Alice seems to have older children with the surname Guy so maybe look for some marriages using all those surnames and see if anything useful comes up!

Success - of a sort.

One of the older children is Flora Winifred Guy born 1895 and her mothers name is Baines
sooooooo Alice must have been originally a Baines then married a Guy then either married or lived with your George Martin.

Thomas Henry Guy born 1891 has mothers name Baines but am not finding a marriage for Alice Baines to a Guy.

Baines is the link between the children - apart from the children in the middle we can't find yet.

Alice seems to end up in California. Her Naturalization Petition lists her as Alice Ann MARTIN (nee BAINES) Alice GUY. She says she's the widow of George Ledger MARTIN.

There is a George (Ledger) Martin born 1858 Durham-son of James and Mary in Wallsend in 1891 so probably not "your" George.
