George Cave born 1811 either Thornbury or Minchinhampton
« on: Tuesday 11 April 17 10:24 BST (UK) »
George served in the Army and from his records his place of birth was Thornbury, born in 1811. The 1861 gives his place of birth as Minchinhampton. He married at Otterhampton Somerset 15 August 1843 and gave his Father's name as William Cave, occupation a sawyer.

Big ask I know but does any kind person have access to the baptism records for either of these places and is able to look up to see if there is a baptism for George. Or have any record for a William Cave. I have found info on George from various census, just would like to know if he shares a link with my husband's Cave family.

Many thanks

I can't see a baptism for George Cave in either of those I'm afraid, but in the Nonconformist records there is a George Cave son of Orlando and Elizabeth baptised at Avening Chapel 28 July 1811, born December 17, 1810. Orlando was a wool weaver according to the 1841 Census and had married Elizabeth Hilliar at Michinhampton on  17 August 1806. If he is the George Cave living in Bethnal Green in 1861 he gives his birthplace as Havening, Glos.

Hi Steve

Thank you for the quick reply. I don't think the George whose Father was Orlando is the correct one. The George I am looking for was living in Wembdon Somerset in 1861 and died in 1870. His son George was born in Barracks, Limerick, Ireland in 1853, George was in the Army when he married and I can not find them in 1851 so I think he must have been serving somewhere else, maybe Ireland.

Unfortunately the Glos. FHS Baptism Index doesn't start until 1813 so no baptism for a George Cave. The only William Cave I could find baptising children around 1813 to 1820 lived in Minchinhampton.

Thank you for that, is there a wife's name on the baptisms for William Cave's children between 1813-1820?

The Minchinhampton register has no baptisms to this couple pre-1813. I can't find William in 1861 - what is he indexed under?

Sorry about the reference to William in 1861 in the last post - confused! In that Census George gives his pob as Minsfield?, Glos., not Minchinhampton - I'm not sure where this last place is coming from. Could it be Marshfield? or more likely a mis-hearing of Nympsfield, which is not far from Monchinhampton and also close to Owlpen where many of the Cave families in the area originated.

There is a William Cave baptised there in 1807 (a bit too early) son of Thomas and Elizabeth,

Sorry again, confusion with George and William again! I see George in Rockhampton, the next parish to Thornbury in 1841, aged 30 with a William aged 10 - son? brother? But I can't see baptisms for either of them in Gloucestershire PRs anywhere in the county according to Ancestry indexes,
