There's a marriage on 12 July 1779 in All Saints, Clayton West with High Hoyland; the groom is Richard Hampshire.

The bride's name is given as Elizabeth Dalton twice in the opening lines of the record but, next to where she signs with an X, her name is written as Sarah Dalton. This could be a simple mistake on the vicar's part - the bride couldn't read what he wrote - but it's still odd since the her name is written as Elizabeth, twice, just a few lines above.

Could the two parts of the document, with different names, have been written at different times? If so, which name is the more likely? If not, is it just an odd mistake? I'd be very grateful for any comments. (My apologies for having posted a similar enquiry a few days ago, with a less descriptive subject line that elicited no replies.)

The BTs say she is Elizabeth.  Perhaps the minister was confused, as the other marriage on the same day was between Isaac Croft and Sarah Dyson.  :-\

Added:  Did Sarah Dyson start to sign her name in the wrong place?  "Sarah" is very similar on both entries.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Its doubtful but is possible ?

Sarah Dalton  may be a Witness of 3 Witnesses and the Vicar forgot to put Elizabeth Dalton name on.

Though there could be be a mix up with Sarah Dyson but with that marriage entered after Elizabeth's marriage and not before, as if Sarah Dyson's wedding had been before then her name would be the for front of the vicars mind but having said that : The vicar would have probably had his list of weddings for the day with both brides names on and in his mind.

The wedding Banns say Elizabeth not Sarah and Wedding itself says Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's name may show on any later sibling baptisms, even 1841census or a Will/Probate or other doc's.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
