Help with Ancestry Photos
« on: Tuesday 18 April 17 19:50 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know how Photo Sharing (or stealing) works on Ancestry? I had uploaded photos of my grandparents on my tree so that some distant relatives could see them. But then I got a bit creeped out when I saw my grandparents pictures pop up on a tree that someone created that appears to have zero relation to me. Their information is added but there is no connection to anyone else on her tree.

So my question is this: if I delete those pictures from Ancestry will they also be removed from anyone else's tree who has added them? I'm hoping if I delete them then they will disappear from the strange tree.

I suppose this is what I get for using a public site where everything is accessible to anyone and everyone.

Do it and see what happens!

If it works - great!

If it doesn't - you'll have to think of something else.

But either way you won't be any worse off.

The pictures will just be deleted from your tree they will still be on the other person's tree .You could try sending a message and ask them to remove the pictures ...I had to do that myself when pictures were taken from my tree so I made mine private after that  :)

I'll delete them and see what happens. I might send a message to the person anyways. I don't mind if relations, no matter how distant, have them but it's a bit creepy when a stranger takes them.

If you delete the photos from your tree, they will still be on the other tree(s) :-\

So, you have learned a lesson ;)

Make your tree private, and invite family to share .
From the tree page, click on the tree name, and then Sharing.
Where it says:

Share your family tree with friends and family

Invite friends and family members to check out your tree. You can give them rights to edit your tree, add photos, or only view your tree. Everyone you invite will be able to see your tree for free.

Start inviting people by selecting one of the options on the left. You can choose to import an existing contact list from your personal email account or enter email addresses individually. You can also invite Ancestry members if you know their username.

No it isn't. Make your tree private and nobody else will see it!

The photos will still be on the other tree, given time they will probably be on a few other trees also because people copy photos and add them to their trees, even if they are in no way connected.
You used to be able to track back photos to the original poster/tree, not sure if ancestry still offer this. It was educational to see the diferent names and locations attributed to a person in a photo.

As others have said make your tree private and invite those with whom you wish to see your tree.
I outdoor also suggest writing via Ancestry to the person who has used your pictures asking what relationship they are to you or your family. You may not get a reply at all and be prepared from them to just ignore your request for them to be removed unless they come up within answer you find satisfactory.
It is one of the most frustrating things finding someone taking copies of your family without asking and you not being able to see any real connection.
I'm sure there are plenty of us who have learnt a hard lesson - I know I did and now my trees private.
