Wood in or around Stockport
« on: Friday 21 April 17 08:07 BST (UK) »
I'm struggling to find my 4 x great granddad, William Wood. He would have been born somewhere around 1775 to 1785 in or around Stockport. There seems to be a number of alternatives. I do know that he married Martha Lowe in 1806. Any help would be much appreciated.

Not much help but they did marry by licence. It says he was residing in the parish of Heaviley in the County of Chester and he was a Hatter

A witness on the marriage was a John Wood. He was also named on the Licence and was from the parish of Stockport - possibly a brother.

Thanks Claire. I've got those bits. He seemed to have a number of siblings, and the hat trade does run through some of the family.

Thanks again

There is a baptism for a William Wood in 1778 at Stockport High Street Chapel (Presbyterian) the son of John Wood and Mary.

There is also a baptism for a John Wood at the same Chapel in both 1783 and 1787 to the same parents. There is also a burial at St Mary's Stockport in 1784 for John Wood son of John, a weaver of Stockport.

Thanks Emeltom.  I can find baptisms of a William Wood at about the right year two or three times in Stockport, but I'm struggling to find a clue as to which one is the more likely. There is Marple, Disley and Romiley as well, all not too far away.  ???

Do you get any clues from the names of his children? Look at the names of the parents of all possible Williams and see if he has any children with the same names. That might give a hint .
