Am I going Mad?!
« on: Saturday 22 April 17 22:00 BST (UK) »
Hello all

I've lost a record which I'm sure I've seen, but can no longer locate, and wondered if you good people could help me.

I'm certain I've seen a record for my Gt Grandfather, Robert James Burns, born 1872, Dalbeattie, Kirkudbright, Scotland, with his step father, George Bott, born 1852, place unknown or at least can't remember, on the 1891 Census.  I thought it was in Middleton in Teesdale, Durham, but I've spent today searching for it without success.  They were lodgers if memory serves correctly, and without mother/wife, Agnes.

They were both sett makers, working in Quarries.

If anyone can help, I'd be really grateful, even if it's to prove my memory wrong!

Think I found Robert in the 1901 census - in Mickleton, Yorkshire

Couldn't see them in the 1891 but maybe it's Mickleton rather than Middleton

Hi iolaus

He's in the 1901 with his wife, Mary Ann, whom he married in 1896 or 7 (can't remember from memory). His mother and brother are in the 1891 Scottish census without him or stepfather,  which makes me think I'm not imagining it, but I've gone blind looking for it today.

I hope you've tried all the variants of Burns - as discussed recently in another thread?  My wife's family has alternating Burn/Burns, and there are other possibilities ....

Struggling to find anything to match your info.  Tried variations, using occupation, stating lodger etc.  The only one I could find that was partly right was on FindMyPast, R. Burn (image could be Burns) single 18 lodger labourer born Scotland, living at 36 Parliament St, Middlesbrough.  Head of household is John Jarvis 35.  Nothing to do with quarries in Middlesbrough though....

Do you have the marriage cert for 1896?  Where was Robert living then?

Where was George Bott born?  In 1881 I can only see born England on FindMyPast's transcription.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.  In 1896  Robert was living in Middleton in Teesdale (as was Mary Ann).  I've no idea where George was born, except England.  That's all that is mentioned on his Census return for 1881, when he was living in Dalbeattie with Agnes.

I've tried everything I know, even searching just for first names, I must have got it wrong (but it then poses the question about where they were as they are not on the 1891 Scottish Census with Agnes and son Hugh).

Any further suggestions would be most welcome.
