Court of Chancery [C78/1712/12]
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 16:49 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with a transcription of the top half of this extract. I can make out the name John Denne and I can see several other Dennes mentioned but I can't make out the first names. I am not sure if the text at the bottom of the image is related to the text at the top so any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance

Matt

Some text on the far right is missing, through damage.

(I think the second section may belong to the same cause.  But it doesn’t follow on immediately, because the last line of the first section ends short, with line-fillers, while the first line of the second section starts mid-sentence. Perhaps the roll has been wrongly stitched?)

Hi there

Many thanks again for the help. From what it says here I'm pretty certain this relates to my ancestor Thomas Denne of Kingston, Kent. I say this because I know that his son William Denne was described as 'of Bishopbourne' in his Will, and also because Bursted is also referred to in several wills.

I know that there is also an Edward Denne, a John Denne, and a Katherine Denne in the family. I think they might also be children of Thomas, do you think that makes sense?

Anyhow thanks again.

Matt

Yes, I think that makes sense.

Sorry for any confusion, but I changed my final comment above when I read it through and saw that the text does in fact run on quite easily between the sections.

William and Katherine (defendants) do appear to be Thomas' children. Can't be sure about Edward and John, judging by this extract alone.

Thanks for that. Looking at your first comment I think Thomas Denne must have been born c1661. If that's the case then he can't be my direct ancestor as he died in 1609. However there are several other people in the family called Thomas and so this may relate to Thomas Denne son of Michael Denne (and grandson of the above mentioned Thomas who died in 1609). He could also be one of Michael's cousins.

I will go through my notes on Michael's descendants tomorrow and see if I can place this Thomas.

Thanks again for your help

Matt

Had you found "A Tour through the Isle of Thanet; and some other parts of east Kent ..." Zechariah Cozens, published 1793

Available on googlebooks - searching under Denne returns 12 hits

Hi thanks for those. I've seen the second book online but not the first. I'll check it out when I can.
