Susan Baker born 1846 civil reg help please
« on: Tuesday 25 April 17 05:12 BST (UK) »
I've been searching fruitlessly for the civil registration for Susan Baker, daughter of Levi Baker and Elizabeth Goodland nee Webb.
She was probably born in 1846 and I did find an unsourced baptism for her in a myheritage tree:
Susan M Baker bap 26 Jul 1846 Montacute, Somerset.
The online Montacute parish registers I've been able to access online cut out at 1843.
I found her older siblings: Marseillea Baker March quarter 1843 and Levi John Baker [spelt Beku] March quarter 1845 on the Gro Index.
The other possibility is that she was born at sea as Levi and family were definitely in Adelaide, South Australia by September 1848, (newspaper report).
I have been unable to find a shipping record for the Baker family and if I could find an English birth reg for Susan it could help with finding it.
Any help would be most gratefully received  ???

Hi
I have not spotted the news item supporting a pre1849 arrival for the family.
However,
This website http://www.familyhistorysa.info/shipping/passengerlists.html
Gives this information
Arrival 1849 Ship GLENELG.

From London.

Biographical Index of South Australia
Gives this information.
BAKER, Levi. Parents John and Susan. Born 1824. Died 1894. Arrived per ORATOR 1849, departed Vic. . Resided Adelaide. Married Eliz. Child Thomas Henry 1849.

Adding This link shows a little more about  BAKER and ship ORATOR

Are you sure you have the correct GRO references?
1843 was in Chard Somerset maiden name Webb
1845 was in Westbury Wiltshire maiden name Goodland

These places are quite some distance apart, to then travel back to Somerset for Susan about 1846.

Ask the moderator to move this to the Somerset Board and hopefully someone who lives there can help with the parish registers of Montcute

Wiltshire ones are confusing  ???
Elizabeth Webb married Samuel GOODLAND in 1836 and they had two sons.  Samuel died in 1841 (after the census) and their youngest son the next year, and both were buried at Hinton St George, Somerset.
Elizabeth had her first child with Levi Baker before they were married, which made it great to find Marcelia was listed under BAKER in her birth reg, but on 16 Feb 1843 she was baptised at Hinton St George as Marcella GOODLAND and only her mother - Elizabeth GOODLAND - named.
Levi BAKER and Elizabeth GOODLAND nee WEBB married on 7 Aug 1843 at Montacute, Somerset.
In regards to the Westbury, Wiltshire birth reg there are also two baptisms there on the same date, 3 Jan 1845, with parents named Levi and Elizabeth BAKER.  The two children are called Levi John and Martha BAKER (and with the variations I've come across with Marcelia's name it's not improbable that it has been mistranscribed!).

You will note she is listed as Marcella GOODLAND on the shipping arrival I have given.

Levi and his brother Uriah can be seen to be in Adelaide in 1848 from the following articles via Trove

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/195937431?searchTerm=%22Levi%20Baker%22&searchLimits=l-state=South+Australia|||l-decade=184|||l-year=1849

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/71612269?searchTerm=%22Uriah%20Baker%22&searchLimits=l-state=South+Australia|||l-decade=184|||l-year=1848

I think the Orator is probably the correct ship for Levi and Uriah's father John BAKER and younger siblings arrival in Adelaide.  The South Australian Register of 3 Oct 1849 Shipping Intelligence says..."John Baker, wife and 7 children".  I'm not sure about the wife bit though as there is a burial record for Mary Ann BAKER of South Petherton, Somerset age 44 on the 26 Jul 1847 and John and Mary Ann were the parents of Levi and Uriah etc.  The family is together in South Petherton in the 1841 census, and John and Mary Ann had their last child Gilbert baptised there on 30 Nov 1845.

I did see that shipping information, thank you  :)  In the newspaper it says "G Baker, wife and child".  Also there should've been 3 children with them by then, as those three of their children survived to adulthood, got married etc.

Thank you, I do appreciate your help and interest,
Marlene
