This may be a complete red herring as  a lot of details don;t match, however there is a marriage of a Matilda Porter Southard to William Thomas Panzetta in 1865 in St Pancras. says her father is William Southard, whitesmith. On 1871 she was born 1840 in Kerwent, Wales, which I assume is Caerwent in Monmouthshire. It just seemed interesting as that's not that far from (although not right next door to) Whitchurch

It wasn't a boys school, it was the workhouse.

Just chucking this one in.

There is a Thomas SOUTHERN bc1795 at Temple, Bristol on the 1871 Census.
Perhaps they got his name wrong.

He is a Shoemaker and Widower.

He is at Bristol City Workhouse, Fishponds (Stapleton Parish).

Archive Reference   RG10

Piece Number   2575

I can't see him in any earlier census.

Some baptisms of children of Thomas and Mary Ann:

Sarah bp.17/1/1830 Bristol
Thomas bp.4/9/1831 Bristol
Mary Matilda (as Southward) bp.20/9/1835 Bristol (perhaps called Matilda to differentiate from mother)

Thomas Southward bp.23/2/1800 Temple Church, Bristol son of William and L.
Mary Southward bp.23/5/1802 Bristol, dau. of William and Love.

William Southard died Sept.qtr.1838 Bristol aged 73
Love Southard died Dec.qtr.1851 Clifton Union aged 91.
