1891 Census help.
« on: Wednesday 26 April 17 09:11 BST (UK) »
I have a descendant David Gordon born 1835 ,have him in every census from 1851 to 1901 and claims hes from Perth in all returns except 1891 where it states NK ,Perthshire   . Cant find a birth for him in Perth as his father was a Ship master. His ship mates record shows leaving Perth for Limerick in 1836. Would NK be Not Known   Or is it something else ? Cheers Raymie.

Unfortunately, before official registration became compulsory in Scotland in 1855 it can be impossible sometimes to trace a birth record.

My g.g. grandfather was also born in Perthshire around the same time and although I have a marriage record, census records and death record I have never been able to trace a birth record for him.

Wouldn't think it has anything to do with his father being a shipmaster.

Also have a few with the NK on them.

Thanks for info 👍 my reasoning for his fathers job was he moved about every few years as on his mates record. 1851 census had his parents ,him ,his brother and sister living at Clyde St Glasgow all with birthplace Aberdeen . Anyway thanks for input and i now know What NK means lol. Cheers Raymie .

Just out of curiosity what were his parents names ?  I assume that you have looked for his birth on the Scotlands People site and drew a blank.

Just to add, don't forget variants such as Gordoun/Gordoune as it was Highland, Scotland.

May be best to use the 'names beginning' option & only use 'G'

Only today I found a name transcribed wrongly on the index.
