Wirral Archives - Sudlow
« on: Wednesday 26 April 17 13:08 BST (UK) »
Hello

My Dad, John Sudlow, was a carpenter. He was born 1907 in Liverpool.

I have a very distant memory that he told me he was an apprentice at Cammell Laird. I believe he left school at 14, so 1921 to start his apprenticeship, if my adding up is right. Of course, it could be that my memory is faulty and he never worked there, he died when I was only twelve, it was a long time ago and I wasn't paying that much attention at the time.

I note that a lot of Cammell Laird's records are kept at Wirral Archives.

If someone happened to be at the archives and could look through the records for any mention of my Dad, I would be very grateful.

Regards

Suds

Hi

Did you read this part from Wirral Archives

Quote
The Cammell Laird collection includes some records of the salaries and pensions of office and engineering staff. We do not hold records of tradesmen and labourers working in the shipyard, or detailed personnel files

Hello

Well I hadn't until you pointed it out.

However, I came at it a slightly different way:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N13981379

Item 8 on the list:

8    1915-59: apprenticeship indentures Wirral Archives Service acc 2006-1715 See Annual Return 2006

What do you think? Is it worth pursuing?

Hi

It's a possibility.  Why not try ringing Wirral Archives to ask if they can confirm he is mentioned in any records held.

There is a record of a John Sudlow who joined the Liverpool Windsor Branch of the Amalgamated Society Of Woodworkers on 12th August 1930, age 22. He was excluded in June 1931 for being in arrears.

David

What a marvellous find, may I ask where you spotted it?

My Dad walked to from Liverpool to London about that time. He went in search of work, which he found. He wrote an account of his journey which I have.

I guess that's when his union membership must have lapsed. He was a strong union man until he died. I can remember going with him to the pub where union dues were collected in the early sixties.

Hello

I had an email from Wirral Archives this morning. There was no relevant information for me but I wanted to say that they were very helpful and I wouldn't hesitate to ask them for help in the future.
