Irish Census 1911 - Curragh Military Camp - Form H?
« on: Sunday 30 April 17 08:20 BST (UK) »
I have found a family I am researching on the Irish Census for 1911 at Curragh Military Camp, South Kildare.

The household return only gives the details of the mother and two children but I am particularly interested in finding more information on the father Thomas CAREY.  He signed the form and at the bottom of the sheet before his signature it "says note - returned on form H".

Does anyone know if form H would give more information on Thomas such as age and place of birth and if so how I could access it?

He'd be under TC at the camp where he was enumerated if there on night

If you read the opening page

Institutional and shipping forms

These forms contain details of the occupants of institutions of different kinds, for example, barracks, workhouses, hospitals, colleges, orphanages etc. In many cases the names of occupants are only given in initial form, ie Mary Smith is entered as M.S. These names are indexed by initial, and hopefully the information in the form itself (county of birth, occupation, marital status) will help to identify the person sought.

The forms are as follows: Form H: Barrack return.

Thank you both for your helpful replies.

Not found a suitable candidate yet but will keep looking.  Really useful to understand the form H and how to search it.

Thanks again.

Dathai and Heywood,

Thank you so much for the additional information.

I had found a possible Thomas CAREY on the 1901 census in Plymouth, Millbay Barracks, born Cork @ 1882 but from military records it it appears this soldier deserted later in 1901.

The Thomas CAREY from 1911 was a "Rough Rider" RE when he married Ellen FOURACRE and from the birth record kindly provided by Dathai I see he was a corporal by 1907.  Not sure this would fit for someone who has previously deserted.  Was hoping place of birth details from 1911 would prove or disprove that these are the same person.

All of your help is much appreciated.
