Mellifont - Patrick and Ellen married 1834 of 3 Evergreen St Cork
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 05:50 BST (UK) »
Seeking any information or contact from distant cousins in Ireland who are descendants of Patrick Mellifont and Ellen Byrne married 1834 South Parish Cork, and lived at 3 Evergreen St.  Patrick and Ellen were my g-g-grandparents.   I’ll be visiting Cork in May 2017 and would be very happy to share a beverage or an email with anyone who is a relative or who has been researching the Mellifonts of Cork.  I do know that my g-grandfather Thomas Mellifont b1838 (who emigrated to Australia 1862) had a younger sister Mary Jane who married a Cornelius Tobin in 1876 and remained living in Cork.  I know the names of other members of the family but do not know who they married or what became of them. I'm interested in anything and everything..   Best regards Phil Mellifont.

Many thanks Maggsie

My G-G-Grandmother Ellen died in 1888 still living at 3 Evergreen St.... but as it turns out it seems the Mellifont men liked women with the name Ellen as my G-G-G-Grandmother was Ellen Miller (or Millard).    Two generations of Patrick Mellifont marrying a woman named Ellen.    But what you have opened up for me is the possibility of a great aunt-  my G-Grandfather Thomas b1838 had an uncle Robert b1800...  so maybe one of Thomas' younger brothers (William b1840, Jeremiah b1842, John b1843 or Patrick Joseph b1848 married an Ellen and had a son named Robert named after the uncle.

Many thanks for your assistance... I'll follow this up.
regards
Phil

Maggsie
If Ellen was married in 1834 her Dob should be c1814 or before making her closer to at least 90 in 1901; however she could be a daughter in law of Patrick Mellifont and Ellen Byrne

Birth of Robert MELLIFOPNT in Ballintemple 1874 LINK
father Hugh MELLIFONT and mother Ellen O'LEARY
I am not immediately seeing a marriage for Hugh MELLIFONT and Ellen O'LEARY

Robert married Oct 22nd 1908 Nora BARRY (F) John LINK
Robert married July 15th 1915 Norah BARRY (F) James LINK

Hi Maggsie

It looks to me like Robert Mellifont tried to marry Norah Barry a second time... once in 1908 and again in 1915.    He changed the spelling of Mellifont to Melliphont the second time but it looks like the authorities picked it up.

I've seen instances in family research in Australia where they have tried to register births a second time... presumably to try and hide illegitimate births-   the authorities often stamped the certificates "Illegitimate" for everyone to see and some ancestors tried registering a second time...

Any theories why someone might try to get married twice?   Mellifont is an unusual name- seems unlikely that there can be 2 Robert Mellifonts with a father Hugh marrying a Norah Barry.

Ever seen anything like this before?

regards
Phil

The Norah Barry's are probably cousins as they have different fathers and he's a widower on second marriage

Ellen Mellifont was the widow of a gardiner she died 1908 so i dont think the Robert who married is her son
