Whoa

Good work overnight here people....

So was it Jos COX Jnr who called himself a Gentleman on his marriage to Alice LEWIN, or his father?!  Could a 21 y/o be a Gentleman???? with a father who was a Labourer..... maybe things had changed!

I have also been told of a will of John LEWIN of 1796 that names his daughter Alice COX, and grand daughters Ann, and Frances (John Lewin COX not yet born).

BUT.... I still don't know if John Lewin COX and John COX are the same man... :-( ... I so wish, like in Australia, the cert's were emailed immediately upon purchase.

Wonderful work, many thanks.

bitzar.

Hi bitzar

I had a good look over St Leonards graveyard earlier and I couldn't find a gravestone for Ann & Joseph Cox, most of the early stones are laid flat and unreadable.  The graveyard is in quite a poor condition.

The only thing I could find with the name Cox was an old grave (no headstone) with a reasonably modern cube stone with the name Dorothy Cox, could she be connected to Ann & Joseph?

Kind regards

Simon

Simon

Thanks for going to the trouble, its much appreciated.  I think Jos and Alice were in Walton le dale from Leicester because their daughter Ann SHERLOCK was there.  I don't believe any other COX relo's were around.

Hi bitzar

Just been scouting about. Have found an entry in the House of Commons papers from his bankruptcy - described as Gentleman ( included a snippet)

There are quite a few references to a Joseph Cox in the Revenues and Customs - one in Devon in the dockyard as a boatman. Another in Woolwich Dockyard listed as a 'master brickmaker' - which may be the same man.

There is a record called Account of Retired Allowances or Superannuations in Public Offices, 1842, in the section regarding deceased employee's there is a record for a Joseph Cox ~ a measurer. ( included)

claire

Again, not sure if your man but it's the closest I can find.

The first attachment is defo him because of this link from Jomot from another thread:

What do you think a 'measurer' would be?!

bitzar.

EDIT: There is an 1837 will for a Joseph COX, Navy Ship Yard Measurer of Stoke Damerel, Devon.  My Joseph died 1840.

Hi bitzar

Wonder if it's something to do with this

http://www.sliderules.info/collection/specialised/9928-df.htm

I'll go back on the site - looks like the second snip could possibly be the man in Devon. Although the book I was looking at suggested it was someone who had died closer to the date (1842) given on the page.
