Signature Comparison
« on: Thursday 04 May 17 19:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm researching a relative, Thomas Mallinson, who I suspect might have been in the Coldstream Guard in the 1880s. To cut a long story short, before I commit to paying for service records I want to be confident I have the right guy. Attached is the signature from his marriage parish record (1888) and the signature from a Royal Guards Reserve attestation record (1900).

I'm inclined to think the signatures are from the same person, but I'm possibly biased here, so a second opinion would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Can you post a bit more of the second one please?
Most of letters in the two look pretty similar, but it's difficult to see the end of the second one and if there's an old long 's' at the end of Mallinson - it may be a letter coming up from the line below.
Otherwise many of the letters look the same - allowing or the fact there's 12 years between the two.

I think they are a match, in particular how he forms the "h o" in Thomas

I think that there's enough similarity, especially in the writing of Thomas and the first few letters of the surname to say that it is likely to be the same hand.

I would say so too and the gap between the capital M and the next letter is there on both.

Thanks for the replies. I've attached a larger image of the second signature, there is some overlap there.

I would agree that it's highly likely that they were written by the same hand.

You can now see the looped letter comes up from the  signature below, and is not part of Thomas Mallinson's.
So I'd say the two signatures probably are of the same person.

I agree with the previous replies - they look like signatures by the same person.
