DC,

There were indeed two Charles Henry Ports living (and who died) in Thanet.  However, the one you are interested in was born in Ramsgate (1884/5) and died  there in 1957 aged 72.  The other (died Thanet 1953 aged 63) was born in Luton (near Chatham) although both became Mariners of various rank.

Charles Henry married Elizabeth Louise Smith at St George's Church, Ramsgate in 1912.  As yet I have not been able to identify where his father (Charles) married Mary Ann Isaacs in 1884.  It appears that the couple had two sons, the one already mentioned, Stanley C, and one in 1915.  He is very elusive but it could be that, he is still alive, or he had not died before 2008.  Also there is no obvious emigration record.

GRO provides four children born to father surnamed Port and mother surnamed Smith.

* Stanley C Port (1913) & Charles Henry Port (1915), in Thanet

* Charles Henry Port (1915) & Eileen B Port (1922), in Cranbrook.

Staney C Port is definitely associated with Elizabeth L Port in 1939 (same house).
Therefore it seems to be the case that the two children born in Thanet are my (distant) relatives.

Someone earlier reported a Charles Henry Port living 1915-1971, found on a tree in Ancestry.
It is not clear whether this is Cranbrook Charles or Thanet Charles.

I found a surprising number of references to the name Charles Henry Port in the newspapers spanning 1915-1939, including a wedding in 1939 of one of the younger generation.

The newspapers confirm a connection with the Navy (1915) for Charles Henry Port, though I did not suspect that both men were involved.

The Cranbrook Charles Henry born 1915 was reg'd in Dec.qtr. - therefore it must be him that died in 1971 showing a birthdate of 28th Sept. 1915.

The Thanet Charles Henry born 1915 was reg'd June quarter - therefore he must be the one born 27th April 1915 who died July 2000 in Harlow, Essex.

Dates of birth were incorporated when deaths were registered possibly when Annual Registration was introduced in 1984.  Not entirely sure on this date.  The dob relies on the accuracy of the informant, one of my Aunts is one year out!

The birth dates are shown on their entries in the GRO deaths index (first included late 1960's) .
