Jane Dyson
« on: Wednesday 10 May 17 16:56 BST (UK) »
One of my 5th great grandmothers was Jane Dyson who was the second wife of my 5th great grandfather, Michael Bowles.  They married 12 June 1776 at St Mary in Prestwich, Lancashire.

In doing research, I have found two baptismal records for a Jane Dyson, both of which could fit.

The first was born 1752 to James Dyson and Rachel Brierley of Royton, Lancashire.  She was baptized 12 Jan 1752 at the Shaw Chapel in the parish of Oldham.

The second was born 1756 to Simeon Dyson and Sarah Greaves of Fulwood (?), Lancashire (previous children were born at Heyside).  She was baptized 11 Jan 1756 at the Shaw Chapel in the parish of Oldham.

Michael and Jane's marriage record does not give any information about who her parents were.  It states that they were both from the parish of Oldham.  The witnesses were James Barl (?) and Thomas Tees or Lees.  Michael signed the record, Jane did not.

Is there a way to tell or figure out which Jane Dyson is my 5th great grandmother?  There were so many Dysons in that area, it's hard to figure out who was who.  TIA.

Welcome to Rootschat

If you could find a burial record for her it may give her age but no guarantees

The problem with that is that they moved to Ireland in about 1798.

BTW, very cute kitty in your avatar.

Welcome from me also  :)
As you say there are lots of Dysons :-\
I wondered about family names being carried on- Simeon and Sarah seems to have had lots of children.
The areas given are close to each other which doesn't help either.
Perhaps looking for a marriage for the other Jane - whichever that may be. Not much help, sorry!

Welcome to Roots

Both marriage records Lancs opc :-

Marriage: 1 Aug 1743 St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire, England
Simeon Dyson - Weaver, Crompton
Sarah Greaves - spinster, Crompton
    Married by Banns

Marriage: 29 Apr 1750 St Mary, Oldham, Lancashire, England
James Dyson - Weavr., Heyside
Rachel Brierley - Spinster, Cowleshaw
    Register: Marriages 1744 - 1754, Page 17, Entry 8

As both marriages are in the right place and the former couple live near Preston on that Jane's baptism details I think geography may play a part of your decision too.

If I was a betting bod and I'm not btw,  I'd be seriously considering James and Rachel.  So more digging round this couple may be the first port of call

Good hunting

Fulwood is now a suburb of Preston but back in the day it was a village north of the  then town.

Oh sorry. I see what you mean now.

Fulwood was an area of Oldham above Heyside.

There was a marriage between Jane Dyson and Joseph Chetham (Cheetham) on 28 Feb 1775, also in Prestwich.  It said the bride's parish was Chadderton.

I was also a little confused about Fulwood because it didn't make sense that they would live near Preston and bring their children all the way to the Shaw chapel to baptize their children.  Thanks for clearing that up.
