Horatio Ross Thomson, Merchant Seaman
« on: Wednesday 10 May 17 17:58 BST (UK) »
Horatio Ross Thomson was born in Montrose on 10 July 1832. I have found two tickets relating to him in the BT 113 series, pieces 169 and 256. He went to sea aged 16 in 1848.

My first question is how do I interpret the numbers in the columns headed 'Reported Voyages'? For 1848 these read "Out 284,71,1; In 284,71,1; Out 71, 31, 3; In 62, 26, 6"; and for 1852 "In 284, 71,1 and 50, 13, 11".

The first ticket (No 3371095) is endorsed "Cancelled. Ft Given in Rd 510120". The second one (No 510120) says, "?Mr Bye. S 3578.623. 6.7.52". What is this telling me?

The last sighting I have of Horatio is in the 1861 census, when he was staying with his brother in Montrose. After that, nothing.

Hi in 1861 he was a Seaman ( Merchant Service)

A PM to Seahall, if the thread is not spotted by him, may be advantageous in sorting out the meaning of the numbers?!

Not sure if you have this;

Horatio Rofs Thomson
Est Age 24
Birth 1832
Born   Newfield, Forfar
Issue Date 10 May 1856

There's a death of a George Francis Thomson 1909, Massachusetts, USA with father named Horatio Thomson (not a common name) but I have no access to further details although someone else will?

Pichano,

I posted the transcription details for that but I think the image may be breaching copyright i.e. I didn't post it?
